Stash Report #6

February 5-11, 2010

Another week where I didn't buy any fabric!!!

Of course, I didn't use much either.  I'd planned on having the Crayola Challenge quilt done by now.  But it's not.  I basically only have the border left to quilt and then bind it, but I know I won't finish today.  So hopefully it will count towards next weeks totals.

I also cut out 19 more pillowcases, but haven't sewn them yet.  If I finish them in the next week, that should add up to a lot.

I did finish the snowman calendar blocks for my mom for both March and April.  That used a total of 1/2 yard of fabric.  (I also plan on writing a tutorial on how to make them and posting it in the next couple of days.  I took plenty of pictures for it.)

So the totals are:
Purchased-this-week: 0
Used-this-week: 0.5 yards
Purchased-to-date: 18 yards
Used-to-date: 62.75
Net used: 44.75

Until later...

Sick pets...

(Warning - long post...)

Doesn't it break your heart to see an animal sick?  I wish they could tell us exactly what hurts and that we could explain the things we do to make them better.

Most of this week has been spent dealing with these issues.  In addition to being sick myself, Michael has been throwing up.  A lot.

I've been getting a lot of use out of the carpet cleaner I got for Christmas.  (Thank you again Heather!!!)  I'm hoping it's just a stomach bug or an upset stomach because of her arthritis medication, but she's not getting better.  She hasn't eaten much of anything for almost a week.  Our vet did an exam and her spleen appears to be enlarged.  We're praying that it's not cancer and that she'll bounce back once again.  I'd certainly appreciate if you'd pray for her as well.

Also we recently found a huge lump on my Mother-in-law's dog, Winston.

He is such a sweet and lovable dog.  He just turned 14 this month and yet he still plays with toys.  The lump appeared and grew very large in just 6 weeks.  He needed to have it taken off as soon as possible.  With such rapid growth, we were concerned it would split his skin if we waited.

Fortunately we have a great vet.  Not only does she do laser surgery (which is easier on animals and quicker to recover from), she also comes right to your front door.

We've only been using her for a little over a year, but she's been such a blessing to us.  With 6 pets, it's always stressful taking them to the vet.  Not having to travel with them or wait for the vet to see us has taken a lot of stress off me and them.

But back to Winston.  It turned out that the tumor was cancerous.  I had to decide whether to go ahead with the surgery or just make him comfortable.  I hate decisions like that.  I'm not cut out to play God!

Based on the information she gave me, I decided to go ahead with the surgery.  Worst case, it would give him another 2-4 months and best case, he could live another couple of years.  It all depended on whether she could get it all.  She was concerned some of the tumor might be under his pectoral muscle and she wouldn't be able to remove it.

Praise God!  It wasn't and she thinks she got it all.

(He wore a pair of Mr. QuiltingBug's socks to keep his feet warm during the operation.)

It was a very long surgery.  Almost 5 hours.  After being under for such a long time, Winston took a long time to completely wake up.  He loves food and could eat anything he wanted as soon as he could walk a straight line.  He came out of surgery at 2:30, but couldn't walk around until about 8:30 that same night.

Here he is still really groggy.

His incision is 6 or 7 inches long.  He's also on lots of medications after the surgery, but he's really doing well.  I'm giving him all kinds of good things to eat and he's enjoying every one of them.  Hopefully by tomorrow he'll be in good enough shape to go back home.  I'm sure he misses his mom and I know she misses him!

Stash Report #5

January 29 - February 4, 2010

Another good week for stashbusting!

I did break down and buy some fabric this week, but it should all be used up by next week.  I bought 2.25 yards for a secret project for my mom (that I've already finished).  I also bought 6 yards of backing fabric for the Crayola Challenge quilt.  I'm hoping to have that done next week as well.

I finished the top for the Crayola Challenge and I estimate that took 7.5 yards.  I also made another 5 pillowcases for another 5 yards of fabric used.  Adding the 2.25 yards for my mom's gift, that's a grand total of 14.75 yards this week!

So the totals are:
Purchased-this-week: 8.25
Used-this-week: 14.75
Purchased-to-date: 18 yards
Used-to-date: 62.25
Net used: 44.25

Wild strawberries...

Yum!  Wouldn't they be delicious?

Not the right season for that though.  And not what I was referring to either.

I've finally finished my Crayola Challenge quilt top.  My color was Wild Strawberry this year.  I don't have a picture of the whole top yet.  Hopefully tomorrow, but I do have bunches of snapshots.

If you'll recall, I started with these fabrics...

I used one of the patterns from the French Braid Obsession book (with a few small changes).  The pattern called for fewer fabrics than I had.  Since I went to the trouble to dye a 12 step gradation, I really wanted to use all 12 of the fabrics.

I made 3 braids as the pattern required...

Unfortunately this made the quilt almost twice as long as it was wide (because of my additional fabrics).  So I added an additional braid and separator.

I'm really pleased with how it's turned out.  I'd love to keep the quilt for myself, but it's already promised to be one of the quilts raffled off to benefit the Ronal McDonald House Charity.  I guess I'll just have to buy more tickets and hope I win it...

I still need to quilt it.  I'm hoping to get it basted tomorrow and quilted by the end of the week.  However because it's bigger than I anticipated, I no longer have enough backing material.  If I can get out of my driveway tomorrow and down to JoAnn's, I hope to still have enough time to finish it by next Monday.  Wish me luck!

Quilts for Kids charity

At the end of last year, several bee members and myself decided to make a quilt to donate to Quilts for Kids.  It's a great charity and to make it even easier, you can request a quilt kit.  They'll send you all of the fabric for the top, binding and backing.  You sew it, add batting and quilt it.  What could be easier?

We've finally finished the quilts we were working on and I plan to mail them tomorrow (assuming I can get out of my driveway).  Thank you Verna, Hils and Bridget for making one of these bright and cheerful quilts.  I'm sure they'll be appreciated!

Did I mention they pre-cut all the pieces for you too?

If you want to do something closer to home, there are local chapters of Quilts for Kids all over the country.  And you can also make pillowcases for the 1 Million Pillowcase Challenge.  I worked on them some more today.  As a quilt bee, our tally is now up to 68!  Woohoo!

So much help...

Whether you have little ones with two legs or four, they're always eager to help mom and dad with whatever they're doing.

Mr. QuiltingBug went through his closet to get rid of old stuff to donate before our bathroom/closet renovation.  He managed to fill a large box with clothes he just never wore.

It didn't take long for Jack to find it.  Just before I took this picture she had her head buried between her paws in a deep sleep.  Well, David being the camera lover that he is had to come and see what was up.

He quickly decided Jack had a great idea and tried to join her.  That resulted in a chase that left a wide open opportunity for Moses.

Which she took full advantage of...

David was also a great help when I was sewing yesterday...

This is his favorite spot to be when I'm in front of the machine.

Is it any wonder I don't get more done?

At least I can see the needle in this one...

Brrr....

January 2010 started off very cold and ended the same way.  All told we ended up with a bit more than 6 inches of snow here.  Unfortunately my niece and nephew who live a couple hours south of me only got a dusting of snow and some ice.  So I thought I would take some pictures to show them what it looks like.

Here's the view out our front door.  (I never stepped off the stoop for these pictures.  It's just too cold!)   It's going to take a while for the snow to melt off our cars.  Luckily I don't need to go out before Wednesday.

If the kids were up here, they would have had plenty of snow to make snow angels and build a snowman.

Can you make out the huge pile of snow that drifted off the roof?  This hill is over 2 feet deep.

And here are some of the icicles hanging off the eaves.

I've enjoyed being forced to stay indoors.  It's a guilt free mini-vacation.  I've spent most of the time in my sewing room, but I'll share more on that tomorrow.

Until later...
