In case you're on the look out for something new yourself, I thought I'd share a couple here.

The first book is The Passage by Justin Cronin. My husband downloaded this book to his kindle and told me how much he thought I would enjoy it, but I was in the middle of another book (see below) at the time. However, by the time I'd finished my book, he'd mentioned this at least a half dozen times so I thought I'd give it a try. I'm so glad I did! It's a long book, but I just couldn't put it down.

This book was named one of the ten best novels of the year by Time magazine in 2010. Here's a synopsis.

An epic and gripping tale of catastrophe and survival, The Passage is the story of Amy—abandoned by her mother at the age of six, pursued and then imprisoned by the shadowy figures behind a government experiment of apocalyptic proportions. But Special Agent Brad Wolgast, the lawman sent to track her down, is disarmed by the curiously quiet girl—and risks everything to save her. As the experiment goes nightmarishly wrong, Wolgast secures her escape—but he can’t stop society’s collapse. And as Amy walks alone, across miles and decades, into a future dark with violence and despair, she is filled with the mysterious and terrifying knowledge that only she has the power to save the ruined world.

By the way, The Passage is actually part of a trilogy. The second book is already out (also a real page turner) and the third book will be out in 2014.

The other book I'd recommend is completely different; it's a non-fiction book called To the Golden Shore: the Life of Adoniram Judson by Courtney Anderson.

It's the story of one of the first Baptist missionaries to Burma. At times it's a difficult read, just because of how heartbreaking their lives sometimes were, but you can see how real faith is played out in people's lives. Here's the book description:

On February 12, 1812, Ann and Adoniram Judson sailed from Salem aboard the brig Caravan as two of the first missionaries to go out from North America. Watching the shoreline disappear from view, they could not have foreseen the impact of their journey on the future of the Christian world mission or on the thousands of men and women who would follow in their footsteps. After a short stay in India, they carried the Good News of Jesus Christ to the golden shore of Burma.

Drawing on letters and church records, Courtney Anderson paints a poignant portrait of Judson’s early life in dealing with the conflict between his desire for material success and the inner call to serve God. For Adoniram Judson the golden shore brought bitter hardships, imprisonment, and family tragedy. Yet, he never wavered in his commitment to win people to faith in Christ and to translate the Bible into the Burmese language.

So those are my recommendations. If you've read any great books lately, I'd love to hear what they were! I'm always on the lookout for new authors and compelling stories.

Moses is actually a great reading buddy. She loves curling up next to me while I've got a good book.

Now I wonder why I waited so long. They're so much fun to make, don't require a lot of fabric and they're quick as well! SO many of my projects take years to complete that it's refreshing to finish a quilt (or the top at least) in a couple of days.

One of my latest Schnibbles quilts is Paganini. I used Shangri-La by 3 Sisters (love this fabric!) It's an older line of theirs from around 2009 or so.

This pattern actually has 4 versions. I picked the first one with the scalloped border. To be honest, I've never done a scalloped border before. It took me quite a while to get it just right. First I drew it using a Frixion pen that disappears when you iron it. Once I had the lines just right, I traced over them with a permanent pen. Once I've quilted this, I'll cut on the lines and bind it.

I was also fortunate to find some ready made bias binding out of the Shangri-La fabric on the internet. What are the chances? I couldn't believe my luck. I'm not that fond of making bias binding and now I don't have to!
I went ahead and made the backing for this quilt as well. I had some left over charm squares, so I made some extra blocks and put them on the back. I can use the middle one for the label once it's been quilted (sometime in the far distant future of course).
Although I've been getting up early to quilt each morning, Gabriel isn't finding herself as energetic. She manages to drag herself upstairs to the sewing room sofa before she falls right back to sleep. That's OK though. I know when the weather turns warmer, she'll be pestering me to take her to the park as soon as the sun is out.
The pattern is Mystery 26 from the Yahoo Group Mystery Quilts 4 Military. This is the second quilt I've made using this pattern. The first one I ended up giving my parents for Christmas and I made this one as a replacement to donate.
For the new quilt, I just went with a simple set of borders, because I didn't have enough of the background fabric to make the diamond border in the original. I think it looks fine both ways though.
You may know it by another name, but basically the idea is that each member puts together their own group of fabrics and passes them around. The other bee members will make a block for them using those fabrics. In the end, you get a quilt out of fabrics you know you like, and you have a block made by each person. There are 12 of us this go around, so we've really just gotten started, but I've finished 3 blocks to date (including my own).

Carla has chosen Civil War fabrics for her block...

Carolyn's Block

And I'm using Blueberry Crumb Cake by Blackbird Designs for my fabric. Mine was actually the fist block I made and I'm planning to remake it when my box eventually makes it's way back to me. I made my flying geese according to the pattern directions and you can see from the picture they don't lie perfectly flat. I used Monique Dillard's Fit to be Geese ruler for the other 2 blocks and they turned out perfectly.
I'm surprised I let that slip by considering I've been appliqueing it for over 3 years! I'm going to guess I was planning to immediately quilt it and thought I'd share pictures once it was completely finished. But as often happens, plans change and the top is sitting off in a pile still waiting it's turn.

The pattern is Baltimore Halloween by P3 Designs. (I also have her Baltimore Christmas pattern, but haven't started on it yet!) I did this one using hand applique.

It was hard to get a good picture of this quilt because there are so many little pieces to each applique block. If you're interested, I shared close up pictures of the individual blocks here and here. And here's a picture of the bats in the outer border. I probably spent close to 100 hours appliqueing all of them.
This is my 3rd yearly review in blog land and I can definitely see that I didn't get nearly as much done in 2012 as in previous years. Not a big surprise. I struggled most of the year with finding time to sew. It's only been the last couple of months where I've found a solution. I now get up a couple of hours earlier each morning and those are my dedicated sewing hours. It was a little difficult at first, but now I've come to love that time of the morning in my sewing room.

I've been struggling to find time to blog as well. I wrote less than a third of the posts I did in 2010 and 2011. Considering this also functions as a journal of sorts (public though it is), I'd like to try to be better about that this new year too. It's important for me to share pictures, which can take a bit of time to import and edit, but I suppose I could be a little less wordy! (Ironically, this is a really long post...)

And here's a recap of the quilting things I accomplished this year (in no particular order):

I participated in AYOS for the first 6 months of the year and these are the quilts I made. (Leap Year isn't quite done yet because I've decided to turn it from Schibbles size into king-size!)
Finally, these are blocks that I'm working on for the Snowmen A to ZZZZ quilt (that I started with my mom in 2012) and a couple of Ladies of the Sea applique blocks I made. (I've finished 12 of the 16 ships now.)
So that is basically a wrap-up of my quilty 2012. I still haven't finished a king-size quilt. I have to believe I'll finally get at least one of them quilted this year and on our bed! As for other goals, I'd really like to knock out some of my UFO's. Early this year I'm also planning a big renovation of my sewing room and I know that will take a good chunk of time. Other than that, I'd just like to continue to spend a little time each day doing something I find so much pleasure in! I hope you get to do the same...

Until later...
She got the quilt kit for her birthday this year and has worked on it with a little help from her Grandma and myself. However, she did pretty much all of the sewing herself!

When she came to visit several weeks ago, she asked if I would quilt it for her so she could give it to her mom for Christmas. Her and grandma had picked out a pretty lime green fleece for the backing (her mom's favorite color). I did a simple large stipple on it and sewed on the binding.
All of the fabrics on the front are flannels so the quilt is incredibly soft and warm. It's only 42" x 51", but should be a nice size to cover a lap while watching TV. My sister was very surprised and pleased when she opened it on Christmas Day.

I took this picture of Jack the other day and I'm amazed at how long her whiskers look. It's not something I usually notice on her...
Although to be honest, my list was much shorter than usual. The biggest one is a quilt for my parents called Hatch and Windows. (The lump in the picture is actually my cat Jack hiding underneath.)
I actually finished this top back in August and it was supposed to by a QOV donation quilt. (The pattern was Mystery 26 from the Yahoo Group Mystery Quilts 4 Military.) However, my mom fell in love with it and kept petitioning me to give it to them. After all, my father is a veteran and was injured while serving.

So I decided to give this one to them for Christmas and make a replacement one for QOV to donate. I quilted this version using the Square Spirals pantograph by Keryn Emmerson.
I also used a bunch of the extra 4-patches from the quilt to make a label for the back...
I managed to finish the binding just two days before Christmas! They were pretty surprised when they opened it and I know they'll enjoy it and get good use out of it. It will actually be the quit my Dad uses while watching TV.
I've also made good progress on the replacement quilt and have all the components units made. Hopefully I'll have the top completed in another day or two. I'm doing this one in blues and browns...
Here's someone who thoroughly enjoyed Christmas -particularly the Christmas Tree! She slept under it, played under it and ate a great deal of it. As Mr. Quilting Bug put it, we had a very festive litter box in December. Unfortunately, she also threw up a great deal of it. She wasn't smart enough to figure out that eating it made her sick and she kept going back for more...

This is the slightly smaller purple version she made for my niece. (I know it looks kind of blue in the picture, but it's ALL purple.)

This one is only about 70" x 87", because she has a smaller bed. My goal was to have it quilted by Thanksgiving when they came to visit. Although I'm only now getting around to sharing pictures, I did have it finished in time!

I used a new pantograph on this one. It was very labor intensive, but I love how it looks on this quilt. Unfortunately, I don't know the name of it or where I got it from. (It's been sitting in my drawer for a long time and there's no writing on it so I can't remember the details!)

Once my mom finishes sewing the binding to the back, my niece will have a new quilt for her bed - and in her favorite color!

Moses kept me company while I worked on Gracie's quilt. (You can see it on the frame in the background.) She's lying on a stack of quilts still waiting their turn to be quilted. Every time I'd come down to that end of the quilt, she'd rub up against me, begging to be petted. It made for some slow going!

There's a king-size patriotic one I'm in the middle of and I also need to paper piece a Lone Star quilt. However, this time I decided to go smaller. Instead of spending all of my time on one large project, I'd work on a bunch of little ones and get more instant gratification. It was definitely the right call this trip!

This is one of those projects. It will either be a table topper or a small wallhanging and is around 30" square. The whole project only took one charm pack, sashing and border fabric, and an afternoon to piece together. The fabric is Collections For a Cause - Hope by Howard Marcus and the pattern is Dora by Me & My Sister Designs.

I've already prepared the backing for this as well so it's ready for me to quilt (as soon as I find the time.) Because this only took an afternoon, I was able to work on a bunch more projects while I was away. I'll try to share some more of them soon.
Since they're fairly large quilts, I offered to help her quilt them. I've already finished with my nephew Robbie's quilt...

It was hard to get a good picture of it because it's almost 90" square. I used the Square Spiral Pantograph by Keryn Emmerson. (That's definitely my go to pantograph.)

I'm in the middle of quilting my niece's quilt right now and hope to finish it before Thanksgiving. I'm using a much more time consuming (but very pretty) pantograph on it.

I'm sure my niece and nephew are going to love the new quilts that Grandma made them!

I've even written a dozen blog entries in my head. Unfortunately someone hasn't yet invented the technology to transport them directly from my thoughts to the computer!

However, I'm happy to report that during my long absence I've been spending quite a bit of time in my sewing room. I also got to spend 5 days with some really lovely women at a quilt retreat in Williamsburg, Va. Fortunately, the retreat fell the week before Hurricane Sandy decided to make her visit to the East Coast. (I'm still praying for all those recovering from her aftermath as well as the Nor'easter that followed.)

That means I've got lots of quilty goodness to share, so I'll start with the next Snowmen A to ZZZZ block. (These patterns are by Crabapple Hill Studios and is an ongoing project that both my mom and I are working on - although she's much further ahead!)
I'm really enjoying working on these while watching the new slate of fall TV shows. Our favorites right now are Last Resort, Revolution and Ben & Kate. We've also been watching the local and presidential debates, but not a lot of stitching goes on during those! We're too busy 'discussing' them to concentrate on anything else.
Moses, on the other hand, has no interest in TV or politics. She turns her attention to more important things, such as finding the best napping spot. Recently, she's been hanging out in the dirty clothes basket. She wasn't too pleased to be disturbed from her slumber for pictures though...
I'm calling it appropriately enough 'Grandpa'. The pattern is called Bali Boxes, but is now out of print. It's one of my go to patterns, because it's simple, requires one jelly roll and even after making several of them, I still like the look of it! The finished quilt is 69" x 76".

I added my Grandpa's name to the top of the quilt. He's 89 and lives in a nursing home, so I'm hoping that it will help the quilt remain with him.
I also added some information on the back in case the quilt gets lost or misplaced, so they'll know who it belongs to. I've heard some horror stories from people who have relatives in nursing homes.
I quilted it using the Square Spirals pantograph by Keryn Emerson, which is a quick and fun one I've used before.
This really is a pretty quick quilt to make. I struggled trying to find the right font to use for his name and had to wait several weeks for my back to heal before I could actually quilt it, otherwise it would have been done much sooner than it was. However, the timing is probably perfect now that the weather has started to change!

So, the stats for this quilt are:

Size: 69" x 76"

Fabrics: Berry Bliss Bali Pop, batiks for the borders and backing

Batting: Quilter's Dream Green Batting

Thread: Aurifil (Piecing & Quilting - Top), Superior Threads (Quilting - Bobbin)

Pattern: Bali Boxes (out of print) - I made small changes to the pattern

Quilting - Square Spirals Pantograph - 33 passes & 6 bobbins

Started: May 2012

Completed: September 24, 2012

Recipient: Grandpa Ricci
